Google Photos Gaining New AI-Powered Actions, Features – IO 2018
Google has today announced some new features that are coming to Google Photos. The announcement came by way of the company’s I/O 2018 developer event and looks to add additional features to the Photos app with a view of improving the appearance of images, as quickly and as easily as possible, and all with the help of artificial intelligence (AI).

The first of these new features is ‘suggested actions’ and these essentially are options that will now appear when an image is taken which can improve the look of the image or quickly store the image somewhere other than in the device’s main gallery. The suggested actions will appear as single prompts on the screen and then all the user has to do is tap the prompt to initiate the action, altering or achieving the image. For example, Google states suggested actions will be able to help to “brighten, share, rotate or archive a picture” much quicker than before. Another new feature coming to Google Photos relies on the use of color, or more specifically, the use of color against a ‘no color’ backdrop.

As Google Photos will now be able to make new photo creations that highlight the subject in color and contrast the subject against a background which will be set to black and white. All with a view to helping the subject stand out more in much the same way ‘Portrait mode’ is already used by many. As a slight extension of this feature, Google has also announced it is working on bringing to Google Photos the ability to take older black and white images and apply color to them. Though, no mention on when this feature will go live was stated.

Google also took the opportunity during this announcement to confirm how Google Photos has evolved in the short space of time the service has been available. As it was three years ago during the same annual developer conference when the service was announced with the app becoming available to download on the same day. Which is again what is happening with these new features as Google has confirmed both suggested actions and color photo creations will be live in the Google Photos app later today.
