In-Depth Review by KHMERSIDE Team
V/H/S/Mixtape V/H/S/Mixtape delivers a jarring, if somewhat uneven, symphony of found footage horror, aiming to blend the raw energy of underground music with the visceral terror of the V/H/S franchise. Directed by David Moreau, known for his work in the thriller genre, this 2026 release attempts to crank the volume on frights through a collection of cursed music videos and terrifying performances. Upon its initial release, the film garnered a rather polarizing reception, reflected in its current KHMERSIDE audience rating of just 4.1/10 from 13 votes. This score suggests that while some viewers might appreciate its audacious blend of genres and relentless intensity, others found its execution perhaps too chaotic or its scares less impactful. Moreau's vision here is ambitious, seeking to tap into a very specific niche of horror fans who crave a fast-paced, blood-soaked experience where the line between performance art and genuine terror blurs. The premise itself is intriguing, promising a unique spin on the anthology format by tying segments together with a musical thread, making it a curious watch for those familiar with the V/H/S series and its distinct style.
The performances within V/H/S/Mixtape often lean into the extreme, fitting the film's chaotic aesthetic. While the ensemble cast contributes to the overall unsettling atmosphere, specific mention must go to Mike Derks, Michael Bishop, and Brad Roberts, whose contributions provide some of the more memorable, albeit disturbing, moments. Their raw, unpolished portrayals align perfectly with the found footage style, lending an authentic, almost documentary-like feel to the escalating terror. David Moreau's direction, while intentionally fragmented due to the anthology nature, manages to maintain a consistent sense of dread, even if the pacing occasionally feels abrupt between segments. The cinematography, inherently limited by the found footage conceit, effectively utilizes grainy visuals, distorted angles, and rapid cuts to amplify the disorientation and panic. This approach, while effective in creating an immersive, claustrophobic experience, can at times feel overwhelming, demanding a certain level of tolerance from the viewer for its deliberately abrasive style. The film prioritizes visceral impact over narrative coherence, a choice that deeply influences the performances and visual storytelling.
V/H/S/Mixtape is undeniably a film with a very specific audience in mind. If you are a die-hard fan of the V/H/S franchise, or if you actively seek out experimental, high-octane horror that isn't afraid to push boundaries, then this mixtape might just be the terrifying tracklist you've been waiting for. Viewers who appreciate films that blend extreme music with horror, reveling in gore, jump scares, and a general sense of unease, will find plenty to dissect here. However, for those who prefer more traditional narratives, polished production values, or a less frantic pace, the film's aggressive style and found footage aesthetic, combined with its relatively low audience score of 4.1/10, might prove challenging. It's a journey into the loud, chaotic, and often disturbing intersection of music and terror, demanding an open mind and a strong stomach. Don't let the rating deter you if you're curious about its unique premise and enjoy a good, unsettling anthology.
