Introduction

USB-C is a kind of plug that works for various devices such as phones, laptops and tablets. It has some benefits over the older versions of USB. It's able to plug in either way, much faster and more powerful. Apple recently chose to use USB-C instead of its own Lightning cable for its new iPhone 15 models by following the European Union's rule for common charging.

What is USB-C and how can I recognize it from other plugs?

The first part of the name means Universal Serial Bus. It is different from the previous versions of the USB cables that were used for everything from printers and hard drives to computer mice and Kindle readers. The USB-C plug has a different shape than the ones before. And it also the same on both sides and can be plugged in either way, which solves one of the common problems with the older versions like the square USB-A plugs because there is no right or wrong way to plug it in.

What makes USB-C so good?

USB-C cables can deliver more power so laptops can be charged quicker, and they allow faster data transfer speeds by letting a large number of files to be moved from a computer to an external hard drive. At the same time, it can send out a video signal to a screen and provide power to connected accessories. The USB-C plug is also made to be ready for the future. Its shape will not change but newer versions and the devices it connects to will have improved features. That means users will have to be careful because older devices might not be able to handle the latest specs. It is thinner than bulky USB-A plugs, making them a better match for newer devices that keep getting smaller.

Why did Apple switch to it?

Apple has always preferred its own Lightning connector for iPhones even though almost no one else used it. It opposed the EU's rule for common charging saying that it would limit innovation and end up harming customers. Apple kept using its own connector even as others started using USB-C connectors in their devices. But after the EU proposal got a key approval last year, the U.S. tech giant changed its mind and did not look back. A company executive presenting the latest iPhone on Tuesday did not even mention the Lightning cable as she showed its replacement.
